Peer Tutors
How to Become a Peer Tutor
Interested in being a course peer tutor? Peer tutors are recruited and hired toward the end of each semester and participate in paid training both before the semester starts and throughout their first semester.
What are the Requirements?
To be a writing fellow, you should:
- Be a strong student (You must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.)
- Enjoy working with people
- Be responsible and reliable
- Be able to work at least 5 hours per week
- Be committed to helping others
- Enjoy working both independently and as part of a team
Do I Need Previous Tutoring Experience?
No. If we hire you, we will train you.
How Do I Apply?
The application process includes a short online application and a recommendation (using this form) from an instructor in the appropriate department(s). If you would like to tutor in more than one department (eg. Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy), you will need a recommendation from an instructor in each department.
Note: Though it is not required, you should consider taking part in a tutoring or Writing Center appointment prior to your application. The experience of meeting with peer academic support will provide an important perspective on what we do.
Next: Select candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the Director of the Writing Center and Peer Tutoring and one or more current tutors.
What Happens if I am Hired?
You will begin training before the fall semester begins (dates TBD) and will continue your training throughout your first semester on the job. Paid training includes reading, observing, journaling your observations, and regular meetings with your new tutor cohort.
