Avoiding Plagiarism

• Be Informed: The Consequences: Understand the Carthage policy regarding cheating (do you know what “unauthorized collusion” is?) and the possible consequences of plagiarism.

Citation Tips

What style are you using? MLA is often used in humanities courses such as English and Literature, while APA is used in social sciences such as Psychology and Business. If you’re unsure, ask your professor. Above all, be consistent.

Be cautious of using automatic citation generators, such as EasyBib or the citation tool on Microsoft Word. The formatting information available through such sites may be incorrect or out of date; if you do use them, check your citations against a respected writing source - many of which can be found in the Writing Center.

Come to the Writing Center to ensure that your citations are correctly formatted. If your professor gave special citation instructions, be sure to bring those in.
