Major(s)

Engineering and Management

With double majors in engineering and management, Kelly Steele ’27 could be feeling overwhelmed by his heavy workload. Instead, his close relationships with Carthage faculty are helping him excel. “Carthage faculty helped plan out my four years as a double major and make my workload not seem so stressful,” he said. “My relationships with professors have helped me in understanding homework, and it feels easy and convenient going to them for extra help.”

As an incoming freshman, Kelly received one of two full-tuition Business Scholarships. “The Business Scholarship meant I could go to college,” he shared. “My family does not come from money, and the scholarship helped alleviate so much worry and stress of the financial burden on myself and my family.”

Now he’s planning to pursue a career in managerial software development. His double major will “set me above competitors in the job field,” he said.

Favorite class

“My favorite class has been Carthage Chorale. I’ve enjoyed working with Professor Maggie Burk; she listens to her students and uses her talents with the students to help music.”

Toughest class

Computational Reasoning with MATLAB has been the most difficult. MATLAB is a coding software where some of the course work applies Calculus I, Calculus II, and Statistics work without taking them, so you just have to roll with what you are given.”

Campus involvement

“I am on the e-board for Residence Life Council, and we help plan events around campus for people to get involved outside of resident assistant duties.”

Golden opportunities

“I have given a presentation with the scope of sustainability on a company called InSinkErator in front of the company president.”

Favorite spot on campus

“It’s between The Tower 4th floor and the Lentz Hall Engineering Center. The comfort of doing homework in an intimate location with not many people around is really nice.”

Best study tip

“Study with friends who are also studious. It helps so much to get in that mindset when you have someone else holding you accountable.”

Best tip for making friends

“Get involved, go to mixers, go to the different events on campus. You can also get involved in class to meet people.”
